INEC Calls for Urgent Funding Ahead of 2027 Elections

As the countdown to the 2027 general elections begins, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is raising alarms over its funding requirements. Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan SAN stresses that adequate financial support is crucial for ensuring secure and efficient elections.

Speaking at a recent conference in Owerri, Imo State, Amupitan emphasized that the commission's funding, although constitutionally guaranteed, falls short of the resources needed for its extensive responsibilities. He pointed out that the success of the electoral process hinges on robust logistics and security measures, both of which require substantial financial backing.

“Financial constraints can hinder what we wish to accomplish,” he stated, highlighting the need for a collective national effort in funding election-related expenses, including security. The INEC chairman underlined that voter registration is the cornerstone of credible elections, warning that outdated registries could compromise the electoral process's integrity.

In addition to traditional elections, INEC oversees voter registration and political party registration, making security vital at all levels. Amupitan noted that even with effective police presence, logistical shortcomings could derail electoral proceedings.

Underlining the importance of inter-agency collaboration, he praised the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) for facilitating coordination between INEC and security bodies. The committee, formed post-2011 elections, aims to improve election security and has expanded its reach to all governmental levels.

Recent elections have demonstrated that adequate security and effective logistics are essential for maintaining order. Amupitan urged that experiences from these events should inform preparations for the 2027 elections, particularly in intelligence and resource allocation.

He called on relevant authorities to ensure that INEC and security agencies receive the resources necessary to fulfill their roles effectively. “If we desire a perfect electoral system, we must be willing to invest in it,” he asserted.

The retreat also featured comments from the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, who emphasized the need for unwavering support from the police to uphold the integrity of the electoral process. She underscored that robust policing is crucial for achieving free and fair elections across Nigeria.

As Nigeria approaches this pivotal moment, the need for financial and operational support has never been clearer, with INEC striving to guarantee a credible electoral environment.
