According to a statement from police spokesperson Daniel Ndukwe, the confrontation escalated when the couple debated the source of their Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) status. In a fit of rage, Emmanuel reportedly struck Chinyere on the head with a pestle, resulting in her death.
The police received a tip-off on September 21, prompting them to investigate. Preliminary findings revealed that Chinyere had been killed on September 19 and her body stored in a nylon bag inside the toilet of Emmanuel's apartment.
The foul smell emanating from the decomposing body led neighbors to intervene, forcing the door open, where they discovered the grim scene before the police arrived. Emmanuel was initially confronted by an angry mob but was rescued by police operatives from the Awkunanaw Division.
Ndukwe confirmed that the suspect confessed to the crime during preliminary questioning, detailing the argument that led to the tragic outcome. The police have since taken Chinyere's remains for autopsy and preservation.
State Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to thoroughly investigate the case. He emphasized the importance of exercising caution in relationships, advising young women to inform trusted friends or family about their movements.
