At the swearing-in ceremony for 13 local government chairmen following the APC's clean sweep in the August 22 council elections, Nwifuru emphasized his commitment to the party’s success, asserting that his directive is a matter of political responsibility, not a threat to opposition parties.
“Campaigns for the National Assembly elections are underway. You must mobilize support for the APC in your areas,” Nwifuru stated, urging chairmen to prioritize party loyalty. He stressed that the party cannot afford to cede any political ground to rivals.
“Go and tell our opposition that we are not threatening them; we are simply committed to winning,” he added. Any chairman failing to deliver their local government area to the APC will face removal, he warned.
Nwifuru also encouraged chairmen to engage with political opponents to foster reconciliation, advising them not to inherit animosities from previous elections. “My enemy shouldn’t be your enemy. Reconcile with those who contested against you,” he urged.
In addition, the governor cautioned deputy chairmen against divisive gossip that could undermine their partnerships with chairmen, urging unity within the councils. “Don’t listen to those who want to create conflict,” he said.
Highlighting the gravity of their roles, Nwifuru remarked that local government chairmanship is one of the toughest political positions, determining future political relevance. He called on the chairmen to serve their constituents diligently.
Addressing gender representation, Nwifuru also directed party leadership to nominate women and youth for appointments as Executive Assistants to the Governor, responding to concerns raised by his wife regarding opportunities for women in the state.
He concluded by reminding the new officials to uphold their oaths of office and serve the community, regardless of political differences.
