Defence Minister Advocates for National Military Training for All Nigerians

In a bold proposal aimed at fostering national unity and understanding, the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.), has suggested that every Nigerian should undergo military training. This initiative, he believes, would provide citizens with a profound appreciation of the sacrifices made by soldiers in safeguarding the nation.

Musa shared his views during an episode of the African Leadership Podcast with Ken Giami, emphasizing that military training exposes individuals to the rigors of hunger, exhaustion, and physical strain—experiences that can reshape one's perspective on life and duty.

“Every Nigerian should be able to go through military training. It will give you a different perspective about life,” Musa stated. He elaborated on the endurance required in military service, highlighting how soldiers often operate under extreme conditions without basic comforts.

The Defence Minister drew parallels between the sacrifices of soldiers and the biblical principle of selflessness, underscoring that military personnel often risk their lives for the greater good. He urged the public to recognize that soldiers are also family members who leave loved ones behind to fulfill their duties.

“It’s painful when you see people insulting the military,” Musa remarked, pointing out that many civilians fail to appreciate the dedication and hardships faced by soldiers. He emphasized that both soldiers and civilians share a common desire for peace and security.

Musa also addressed the challenges posed by increased infiltration across Nigeria’s borders, linking it to the instability in neighboring countries such as Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali. He noted that Nigeria is actively strengthening bilateral relationships with countries like Cameroon to enhance security in the southern region.

In advocating for military training, the Minister aims to bridge the gap between civilians and the military, fostering a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by armed forces in protecting the nation.
