This initiative aims to expand access to specialized medical services and reduce the need for residents to seek treatment abroad, addressing the issue of medical tourism. The announcement was made during the 14th Regular Meeting of the Katsina State Executive Council, chaired by Governor Dikko Umar Radda.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Lawal Rabe, emphasized that the new equipment will bolster the centre's capacity to provide a wide range of services, including medical, surgical, imaging, diagnostic, and laboratory care.
“The centre will have the capability to admit at least 80 patients while delivering modern healthcare services,” Rabe stated, highlighting the importance of this investment in strengthening local healthcare infrastructure.
The initiative is designed to alleviate financial pressures on families who often travel outside Katsina or even Nigeria for specialized care. By enhancing local facilities, the government aims to make advanced healthcare more accessible to residents.
Rabe noted that this move would also position the General Amadi Rimi Specialist Hospital as a major referral center for advanced diagnosis and treatment, particularly in cancer care and specialized imaging services.
This latest investment underscores the Katsina government's commitment to improving healthcare accessibility and outcomes for its citizens, reinforcing its focus on building a robust healthcare system.
As the project progresses, it is expected to significantly impact the quality of healthcare available within the state, ultimately reducing the reliance on medical tourism.
