Controversy Erupts Over Funke Akindele’s Birthday Post Amid Ogogo’s Funeral

Nollywood actress Funke Akindele has stirred up a wave of backlash after sharing birthday photos on August 24, the same day veteran actor Taiwo Hassan, known as Ogogo, was laid to rest. Ogogo passed away on August 23 at the age of 66, prompting an outpouring of grief from fans and colleagues alike.

As friends, family, and fellow actors gathered to pay their respects, Akindele’s timely birthday post didn’t sit well with many social media users. Critics questioned the appropriateness of celebrating her birthday while the industry mourned a beloved figure.

One user, Olayinka Mujeeb Adeniyi, expressed discontent, stating, “Aunty Funke, shame on you! We are mourning Ogogo, and you’re posting about your birthday. This is not fair.”

Another commenter, OAT~AZEEZ, suggested that she could have postponed her birthday celebrations, emphasizing the need for reflection during such a somber time. “Why not shift your birthday to another day?” they questioned.

ZBSS also weighed in, criticizing the timing and suggesting it reflected "fake love" in the industry, especially since Ogogo was a mentor to many, including Akindele. “This is just another example,” they lamented.

Despite acknowledging Akindele’s earlier condolence message, Constantinople questioned her priorities, saying, “You’re too hungry to post on your birthday. What a good human being you are.”

KAN’EL, while extending birthday wishes, suggested that Akindele could have chosen not to publicize her celebrations this year. “Today should be all about Ogogo,” they remarked.

The heated discourse continued with another commenter questioning whether Akindele would have posted if the deceased were a family member, highlighting the delicate balance between personal celebrations and public mourning.

The situation has ignited a broader debate on social media about whether celebrities should suspend public celebrations following the death of notable figures in their industry.

As the reactions unfold, Funke Akindele’s birthday post has inadvertently sparked a conversation on respect, timing, and the responsibilities of public figures in the face of loss.

This incident serves as a reminder of the complexities surrounding public sentiment and celebrity culture, especially in the tightly-knit world of Nollywood.
