Community residents revealed that the group had been using the substance recreationally, leading to the fatal outcome. An anonymous resident stated, “The students were taking what they called laughing gas. Tragically, two died from the substance, while the other two are now receiving medical treatment.”
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the incident, with Public Relations Officer DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi announcing that an investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the deaths. “We are looking into a suspected drug-related incident at Oke-Ola Phase II, Isara-Remo, where two individuals were found dead and two others were hospitalized after allegedly consuming hard drugs,” Babaseyi said.
The deceased have been sent for autopsy, and the police have urged the public to stay away from illicit substances. “The Command warns against drug abuse and encourages community members to avoid these dangerous substances,” he added.
Efforts to reach the management of Gateway ICT Polytechnic for comment were unsuccessful, as attempts to contact the institution’s Public Relations Officer went unanswered.
Nitrous oxide is commonly used as a medical anesthetic but poses significant risks when misused, with potential for dangerous side effects or even fatal outcomes. The event has raised concerns about the growing trend of substance abuse among young people in Nigeria.
