Rising Insecurity at Federal Polytechnic Ilaro: Students Urge Urgent Action

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has raised serious concerns regarding a surge in insecurity and robbery incidents affecting students at the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro. The association is calling for immediate intervention from security agencies and the institution’s management to restore safety on campus.

In a statement issued by Adimado Ahmed, NANS Public Relations Officer and a student at the polytechnic, the association highlighted the growing anxiety among students as the number of reported robberies and harassment incidents increases. “These incidents not only threaten the safety of students but also undermine the conducive learning environment that the institution is known for,” Ahmed stated.

NANS is urging the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and other relevant security bodies to enhance their presence and improve security measures around the campus. The association specifically called for heightened security patrols, increased surveillance of student hostels, and robust intelligence-gathering efforts.

“The safety of our students and staff is paramount. We ask that those responsible for these criminal activities be apprehended and prosecuted swiftly,” Ahmed added. The student body also appealed to local residents of Ilaro to collaborate with security agencies to bolster community safety.

“Security is a shared responsibility. We need the cooperation of residents, landlords, community leaders, and business owners to identify suspicious activities and prevent criminal elements from exploiting our town,” the statement emphasized.

Additionally, NANS advised students to remain vigilant and minimize late-night movements, urging them to report any suspicious activities to security personnel. They also encouraged the use of the Gateway Shield App, designed for reporting security concerns to the Ogun State Police Command for prompt action.

“The safety of students and residents must be a priority. We believe that coordinated efforts among the institution’s management, security agencies, and the community can produce lasting solutions,” the statement concluded.

NANS reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the welfare, security, and academic interests of students, pledging to engage relevant stakeholders until a stable and secure environment is restored.

As concerns about safety continue to mount, students hope that swift action will be taken to protect their rights to education without fear of violence or crime. The community, students, and authorities are urged to work together to ensure a safe learning environment for all.
