Lagos State Trains 400 Retiring Officers for a Smooth Transition into Retirement

The Lagos State Government has successfully conducted a Pre-Retirement Sensitisation Workshop aimed at preparing 400 officers from the Unified Local Government Service for their transition into retirement. The workshop, held at the Adeyemi-Bero Auditorium in Alausa, Ikeja, is part of the state’s initiative to ensure retiring officers can navigate this significant life change effectively.

Ms. Toyin Ogunlana, Permanent Secretary of the Office of Local Government Establishments and Training, emphasized that retirement should be perceived as a new chapter in life rather than the conclusion of a career. “Retirement is a significant milestone that requires careful planning and informed decision-making,” she stated, highlighting the importance of preparation to enhance financial security and emotional well-being post-service.

The workshop addressed common challenges that retiring officers often face, including a lack of understanding in pension administration, financial planning, and healthcare management. Ogunlana noted that many officers tend to begin their retirement planning too late, often only in the final years of service. 

With the theme “Retirement Ready: Ensuring a Seamless Transition from Service to Pension,” the event aimed to equip participants with necessary skills and knowledge. Ogunlana expressed confidence that the program would empower attendees to prepare adequately for life after public service.

Mr. Babalola Obilana, Director-General of the Lagos State Pension Commission, commended the initiative as a proactive measure for ensuring a smooth transition into retirement. Represented by Mrs. Morenike Makinde, Head of the Technical Department at LASPEC, he urged participants to familiarize themselves with the Contributory Pension Scheme and maintain accurate retirement records to avoid delays in accessing benefits.

In her remarks, Mrs. Bukonla Durodola, Permanent Secretary of the Local Government Service Commission, encouraged officers to approach retirement positively, viewing it as an opportunity for new endeavors. She emphasized the importance of proper planning and a proactive mindset to maximize opportunities beyond public service.

The workshop serves as part of the Lagos State Government's ongoing commitment to support its workforce, ensuring that retiring officers are well-prepared for their next chapter. The initiative not only aims to alleviate the anxiety surrounding retirement but also fosters a culture of proactive planning among public servants.
