Lagos Shuts Down Six Steel Firms for Environmental Violations

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has taken decisive action by sealing six iron and steel manufacturing companies located in the Odogunyan Industrial Layout, Ikorodu, due to alleged environmental violations. This enforcement operation was announced via LASEPA's official X handle on Monday.

The directive for the operation came from Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, as part of the Lagos State Government's commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.

In a statement, LASEPA noted that inspections of the affected facilities revealed multiple breaches of environmental standards, leading to their closure. The companies involved include Germini Steel Nigeria Limited, Top Steel Nigeria Limited, Pulkit Alloy Nigeria Limited, Landcraft Steel Nigeria Limited, Sunflag Steel Nigeria Limited, and African Steel Nigeria Limited.

The agency identified various violations, including the emission of brown dust, black dust, mill scale, and other non-metallic particulate matter, all of which threaten air quality and pose significant risks to public health and the environment.

Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, General Manager of LASEPA, emphasized the agency's ongoing commitment to ensuring that industries adhere to environmental regulations. He called on all companies operating within the state to prioritize environmental responsibility and comply with regulatory requirements.

"The Lagos State Government is dedicated to protecting residents from the adverse effects of industrial pollution. We will not hesitate to sanction companies that violate approved environmental standards," Ajayi stated during the enforcement exercise.

LASEPA's recent actions are part of a broader initiative to improve air quality and reduce pollution across Lagos. In recent months, the agency has sealed several facilities for various environmental infractions, reflecting a heightened emphasis on environmental compliance.
