Kwara Law Officers Set Ultimatum Over Unpaid Allowances, Threaten Strike

Kwara State law officers have issued a seven-day ultimatum to the state government, demanding the payment of outstanding allowances and salary harmonization with magistrates. 

The Law Officers Association of Nigeria, Kwara Chapter, detailed their concerns in a letter to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, dated July 20, 2026.

Acting Chairman Keyinde Ayorinde and Secretary Tolulope Oniyide expressed frustration over the government's lack of response to previous appeals regarding unpaid statutory allowances. 

They highlighted the non-payment of a 50% furniture allowance dating back to 2020 and robe allowances for the years 2024, 2025, and 2026 as major issues.

The association’s letter emphasizes the urgent need for salary harmonization, citing a 2005 agreement that mandates alignment of their compensation with that of magistrates. They argue that these demands are essential not only for their welfare but also for the effective functioning of the justice system in Kwara State.

“Our outstanding entitlements are vital for our well-being and reflect the nature of our duties, which are essential to the administration of justice,” the letter stated. The law officers contend that their roles are integral to the state’s legal framework and governance.

Despite attempts to engage with both the governor and the Office of the Head of Service, the association reports that no substantial progress has been made. As a result, they are prepared to initiate an indefinite strike should their demands remain unmet by July 26.

The potential strike raises concerns about its impact on the judicial system, which is already under strain. Legal experts warn that a prolonged disruption could hinder access to justice for citizens, exacerbating existing challenges within the state's legal framework.

As the deadline approaches, the association remains hopeful for a favorable resolution but emphasizes that they are ready to act if necessary. The situation reflects ongoing challenges related to the compensation and working conditions of public servants in Nigeria.
