First Lady Calls for Saudi Partnership to Revamp Almajiri Education System

Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Nigeria's First Lady, has urged Saudi Arabia to collaborate with Nigeria in reforming the education of Almajiri and out-of-school children, emphasizing that neglecting this demographic poses a significant security threat to the nation.

During a meeting with Ambassador Yousef Mohammed Al-Balawi at the State House in Abuja, Tinubu highlighted the necessity of integrating Islamic teachings with formal Western education, aiming to provide a holistic educational framework for Almajiri children.

“I work with women and vulnerable children. My heart goes out to the Almajiri children up North. They need better care,” she stated, warning that the insecurity in Nigeria could worsen if these children remain uneducated.

The First Lady expressed her belief that formal education for Almajiri children could secure Nigeria's future and called for strategic partnerships that would respect both Islamic values and modern educational needs.

Ambassador Al-Balawi, who has been in Nigeria for five months, echoed the sentiment that both nations share historical, religious, and cultural ties, and he is optimistic about enhancing economic cooperation.

He noted, “Our countries have a strong relationship, and we share common ambitions to improve our economies.”

The Almajiri system, which traditionally provided religious education, has deteriorated over the years, leaving millions of children vulnerable and without access to formal education or healthcare. Estimates indicate that Nigeria has between 8 to 13 million Almajiri, contributing to one of the highest rates of out-of-school children globally.

This unaddressed population is often exploited, with many being drawn into extremist groups like Boko Haram and various bandit networks.

Tinubu’s initiative seeks to address these systemic issues, advocating for a model that combines Quranic instruction with practical vocational pathways, ensuring a well-rounded education for these children.

Her appeal marks a critical step in addressing the dire educational crisis facing Almajiri children, with the potential for lasting impact on Nigeria’s overall security landscape.
