Ogun Customs Impounds 2 Dangote Trucks With Several Bags Of Rice

...says Customs is promoting football Club to divert youths attention from criminal activities

The Nigeria Customs Service Ogun 1 Area Command has intercepted two Dangote Trucks loaded with 303 bags of  sumggled  parboiled foreign rice and from other sources totalling 3, 154  bags.


The Controller of the Command, Comptroller Bamidele Makinde disclosed this to Journalists during a monthly Press conference,at Idiroko,to highlight efforts of the Command in promoting socio-economic development and Trade facilitation for July.

These intercepted bags of rice Comptroller Makinde Bamidele said is an equivalent of 5 trailers load.


According to him,a Truck with registration number EKY 971 YE, belonging to Dangote group of companies, loaded with 75 bags of foreign parboiled rice of 50kg each concealed with 900 bags of Dangote cement was intercepted along  Ibeshe road in Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The Controller said similarly, on the early hours of Tuesday, August 23rd,2022, another truck with Kano State registration  number, BCH 531 XA loaded with 228 bags of Sumggled foreign parboiled rice of 5okg each concealed with  bags of Dangote cement was intercepted along Lanfenwa, Abeokuta axis,in Ogun State respectfully.


Makinde further stressed that,if all the intercepted bags of rice were allowed into Nigerian market,no doubt it would be harmful to Federal Government Rice Policy which aimed at providing staple food at affordable prices and generate employment  opportunities for the jobless Nigerians.

Giving details of other recorded seizures during the period under review, Comptroller Makinde said several others goods to include 150 pieces of used Compressor,8 units of used vehicles as means of conveyances,6 units of Motorcycles, 153 Bales and 68 Sacks of used Clothings.  


Others according to him,were 79 sacks of used shoes,11 cartons and 220 pieces of foreign wines, 301 pieces of used tyres,724 Kegs of 25 litres each of petroleum products totalling 18,100 litres,310 cartons of Frozen poultry products and 16 sacks of used bags.


"Aside from proactive operations in checking illicit trade in Idiroko Border,the Command also engages in non-kinetic activities whose objective is to make the area conducive for economic to thrive.


"Currently,the Command's football club(known as Customs FC) which has been in existence for decades was promoted from the Nigeria Nationwide league, division three(3) to division two ( 2) on 19th July 2022. Presently, youths from the various border Communities across the State constitute a majority of it's players (about 18 of them).


"Another (6) of it's players are natives of different states of nation and Republic of Benin,while only eight (8) of it's players are officers of Nigeria Customs Service.One of it's coaches is a native of Ijebu-Ode,Mr.Fatai Biliyu who is currently undergoing a month training at National Institute for Sports,Surulere,Lagos State". Makinde explained.

One of the advantages derivable from the football according to Controller Makinde,is to keep the youths especially from border Communities engaged so that they may stay away from illicit and criminal activities while ensuring that they earn a living.


While concluding his address,the 'action Controller ' reassured all legitimate business communities of maximum cooperation for trade facilitation urging them to contact Customs for any trade related information, enquiry as well as complaints.

Comptroller Makinde while also full of thanks and appreciations to the Controller General of Customs,(CGC),Col.Hamid Ali(rtd) and his entire team for the continuous support warned criminal elements in the State to steer clear of smuggling activities or else prepare to lose their properties and go to jail. Makinde as well thanks all stakeholders,traditional rulers, journalists as well as all security agencies for their continuous collaborative efforts and synergy.
