The Federal Medical Center FMC, Abeokuta,Ogun State has received Hospital Equipment and Consumables Worth of several millions of dollars .
The medical items falicitated by JAMB were donated by a US based organization Project
Commission on Urgent Relief and Equipment (C.U.R.E.)
Speaking on Friday at FMC, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta,during the official commissioning of the equipment and Consumables, Register,Joint Administration and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Professor Isahq Oloyede emphasized on the need to support the government in promoting health Care delivery system in Nigeria.
"In order to uplift the face of healthcare services and educational institutions in the country, JAMB board would continue to prune down its expenses through prudence, the adoption of relevant cost-saving technology and other efficient strategies to free up resources and support the major stakeholders, such as the tertiary health and educational institutions through this type of interventions and its flagship programme of NATAP-M awards through which the board has supported tertiary institutions-inftastructure with over a billion Naira in the last three editions".Oloyede stressed.
He said, after the COVID 19 pandemic experience, and the realization to adequately equip the nation's public health institutions, the JAMB decided to enter a partnership with Project C.U.R.E, a giant agency in the United States of America, to equip 12 tertiary health institutions in Nigeria. This is premised on our belief that we could address the deficiencies in the health sector of our nation by contributing our own little quota".
"This modest efforts is not unique as the board, since the inception of its present leadership, has been providing critical interventions in some other sectors of national life such as health, social welfare, infrastructure and education.
He therefore urged all the benefiting public hospitals to protect the equipment and make good use of them explaining that any hospital that fails to justify the monetary and human capital investment in the project, shall be dropped from the second phase of project.
Prof. Oloyede maintained that, in order to uplift healthcare services and educational institutions in the country, the examination board intervened to support government's efforts aimed at closing the huge medical infrastructural gap.
He noted that, the Board paid the sum of N150million for the door-to-door port transportation of the free equipment from Project C.U.R.E warehouse and onward shipment of the equipment to the 12 medical centres in Nigeria.
He urged other individuals and corporate bodies to emulate the the spirit of altruism by rededicating themselves to the promotion of humanity.
"There is no gainsayng the fact that Covid-19 pandemic provided the much-needed impetus for countries around the globe to go the extra mile either by looking inwards or by tapping into available opportunities. In Nigeria, the pandemic jolted our consciousness to the need to adequately equip our public health institutions to complement the efforts of our highly-skilled medical personnel.
"It is in the realization of this goal of provisioning our public health facilities with the right tools that JAMB decided to enter into a partnership with Project C.U.R.E, a grant agency in the United of America, to equip 12 tertiary health institutions in Nigeria. This is premised on our belief that we could address the deficiencies in the health sector of our Nation by contributing our own little quota.
"University of Ilorin teaching hospital was the first to take the delivery of the medical equipment in June, 2022. Other 10 medical institutions that enjoy the facility were spread across the six geo political region of the country. They are University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Borno State, Yusuf Maitama Sule University Teaching Hospital, Kano and University of Nigeria Nsukka, Enugu State among others."
Speaking at the ceremony, former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, who was represented by his wife, Chief (Mrs.) Bola Obasanjo appreciated the JAMB registrar for the donation to the Centre, imploring him to do more.
Mrs. Obasanjo charged the staff of FMC to give maximum support to the Medical Director for more achievements.
Also,the Alake and paramount ruler of Egba Land, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo represented by Baaroyin of Egbaland, Chief Layi Labode described Prof. Oloyede as a worthy representation of Egbaland and appreciated him for his kind gesture towards the Federal Medical Centre Abeokuta.
Earlier,In his address, the Chief Medical Director of Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, Prof. Adewale Musa-Olomu called on well meaning Nigerians to support the Centre because the Accident and Emergency Unit is in need of medical facility, emphasizing that, the facility is over populated when there are large number of patients.
"I want to call on well meaning Nigerians to support Federal Medical Centre Abeokuta. Our Accident and Emergency is in need of Medical facilities. We put our patients on bear floor because of facility at the emergency is over stressed."
Olomu also thanked the JAMB Registrar Prof. Ishaq Oloyede who is a facilitator of new equipment and consumables donated to the centre for his kind gesture, describing him as a son of the soil.
He noted that, the centre can boast of medical facilities across the 20 local government areas of the state.
