Senate Approves Direct Primary For Political Parties, Transmission of Elections Results

Senate President.

By Our Reporter
The Senate has approved that henceforth, all political parties must use direct primary mode in picking their choice candidates.

The Upper House as well
accepted the electronic transmission of election results.

This was contained in the Conference Committee report submitted to the chamber on Tuesday.

Electoral amendment act places on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) the right to transmit results without subjecting their discretion to any other organ.

First Awareness reports that, the electronic transmission of election results  is a proviso in clause 53 of the electoral amendment act.

With the development,INEC will now have to decide how to transmit election results — either electronically or manually.

As for direct primary, all card carrying members of a given Political Party must be allowed in the Party election to elect candidates of their choice .

Hitherto,First Awareness recalled that some Political Parties elected or chosen their Candidates for the general elections through indirect primary whereby, some selected members of the party were given free hands to select candidates on behalf of their parties

The next presidential elections  First Awareness gathered will hold on Saturday, February 18, 2023.
