FG Launches Investigation into Alleged Malpractices at FMC Abeokuta Amidst Complaints

The Federal Government has initiated an investigation into allegations of unprofessional conduct and illegal levies involving officials at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Abeokuta, Ogun State. 

Dr. Iziak Kunle Salako, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, announced the inquiry during a recent event at the center, where he flagged off the distribution of emergency ambulances to local health facilities under the National Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System (NEMSAS).

Salako revealed that his office has received numerous complaints and media reports highlighting concerns about misconduct at the tertiary healthcare institution. 

He emphasized that professional and respectful patient care should be the minimum expectation from any government healthcare facility.

The minister assured that any officials found guilty of misconduct would face appropriate sanctions as per civil service rules. "When patients come to our hospital, they expect professional medical care, support, and clear communication," he stated.

Acknowledging the hard work of health workers maintaining high ethical standards, Salako stressed that the government would not tolerate actions that undermine public trust in healthcare institutions. 

He noted that complaints have surged in recent months, prompting the need for a thorough examination of the allegations. "We will comprehensively investigate these claims and impose sanctions where necessary," he affirmed.

This investigation aligns with the Federal Government’s efforts to strengthen emergency medical services and enhance public confidence in Nigeria's healthcare delivery system. 

At the ambulance distribution event, the government provided 13 new vehicles to Ogun State, including advanced life support and tricycle ambulances designated for various healthcare facilities.

Salako highlighted that the success of emergency medical interventions relies not only on the availability of vehicles but also on the integrity and professionalism of the personnel involved.

He urged FMC Abeokuta's management and other beneficiary facilities to ensure that government assets are protected and used strictly for medical purposes.

The minister's statements underscore the government's commitment to improving accountability and service standards in federal healthcare institutions, aiming to provide Nigerians with a responsive and accessible healthcare system.
