Tinubu Launches $7 Billion Ogun Deep Seaport and Economic Zone Initiative

President Bola Tinubu has unveiled a groundbreaking investment package exceeding $7 billion aimed at developing the Ogun State Blue Marine Special Economic Zone and the Gateway Deep Seaport. This initiative is poised to enhance Nigeria's maritime economy and attract significant foreign investments.

During a signing ceremony in Paris, France, with DP World—an esteemed global ports and logistics operator—Tinubu emphasized the importance of these projects for bolstering Nigeria's economic landscape. The agreements are expected to create over 50,000 direct jobs and numerous indirect employment opportunities upon completion.

"The agreements we are signing today combine vision, expertise, and capital," Tinubu stated, assuring investors of the Federal Government's commitment to providing regulatory clarity and policy stability. He highlighted that these projects would not only generate non-oil export earnings but also contribute to the country's economic diversification.

The Gateway Deep Seaport, located at Ogun Waterside, will feature a four-kilometer berth with an 18-meter draft, enabling it to accommodate larger vessels. This facility aims to alleviate congestion at the Lagos port corridor, particularly at the Apapa and Tin Can Island ports.

Additionally, the Ogun State Blue Marine Special Economic Zone will span approximately 10,000 hectares and will be integrated with the deep seaport to support various sectors, including manufacturing and logistics. "A port integrated with a special economic zone is essential for building a robust economy," Tinubu noted.

To facilitate these projects, the Federal Government will enhance road, rail, and power connectivity and streamline bureaucratic processes, ensuring a smooth transition from agreements to implementation. The President also linked these developments to the strategic Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, underscoring its significance for trade and transport.

Tinubu praised Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and his administration for their efforts in securing land and structuring the investment framework, which reduces risks for global investors. "I commend your leadership and commitment to making these projects a reality," he stated.

The signing ceremony was attended by key officials from Ogun State, as well as representatives from DP World and the Nigerian Ports Authority. With these ambitious plans, Tinubu aims to address Nigeria's logistical challenges, positioning the nation as a central hub for West African trade.

As the projects move forward, the President urged all stakeholders to maintain the momentum and quickly advance towards implementation, marking a significant step in Nigeria's industrial and economic growth.
