Peter Obi Advocates Respectful Political Discourse While Demanding Accountability

At the 2026 All Nigeria Editors’ Conference in Enugu, Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), emphasized his respect for President Bola Tinubu, asserting that he would never resort to personal attacks against any political figure.

Obi's remarks came amid discussions on the controversial debt situation in Anambra State, as he highlighted the importance of accountability in governance. He urged that political disagreements should center on policies and performance rather than on individual character.

“I cannot abuse any governor or anyone in government. I respect the office of the President, and I have never disrespected anyone publicly,” Obi stated, maintaining that criticism should be constructive rather than derogatory.

While he underscored the necessity for respect, Obi affirmed that questioning the decisions and performance of public officials is essential. “Citizens and the media have the right to scrutinize leaders,” he added, stressing that this scrutiny is vital for democratic health.

Obi also pointed out that the character and conduct of political leaders shape societal values. He urged editors and journalists to hold politicians accountable based on their records and qualifications.

“The character and behavior of a leader exemplify the values of society. Leaders must embody these values,” he noted.

His comments come as Nigeria gears up for the 2027 elections, where he advocates for an issue-based, credible electoral process. Obi's approach aims to foster a political culture focused on integrity and public service.

In a climate where personal attacks often overshadow policy discussions, Obi's stance on respectful engagement sets a noteworthy precedent for political discourse in Nigeria.

As Nigeria navigates its complex political landscape, Obi’s commitment to respectful criticism could influence how future political debates unfold, emphasizing the importance of accountability without descending into personal animosity.
