PDP to Hold Fresh Governorship Primary in Gombe Following Court Ruling

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced plans for a fresh governorship primary election in Gombe State, following a Federal High Court ruling that invalidated the nomination of Professor Isa Ali Pantami as its candidate for the 2027 elections.

This decision comes after the court, presided over by Justice Amina Aliyu Mohammed, ruled that the primary process that led to Pantami's selection did not adhere to the party's guidelines or relevant electoral laws. The ruling was prompted by a pre-election suit filed by fellow PDP aspirant Usman Aliyu Garry, who challenged the legitimacy of the prior election.

Pantami, who recently defected from the All Progressives Congress, was initially selected as the party's candidate through a voice affirmation at a primary held in May 2026. The PDP subsequently presented him as its sole candidate in June.

In a statement, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Haruna Mohammed Jungudo, emphasized the PDP's commitment to internal democracy and the rule of law. He confirmed that the party would thoroughly review the court's judgment and take prompt action to comply with its directives.

"The PDP is a law-abiding political party and respects the authority of the judiciary," Jungudo stated. "We will ensure full compliance with the court's orders and initiate the processes for a new governorship primary in Gombe State."

Details regarding the date and timetable for the fresh primary will be communicated to party members and stakeholders once arrangements are finalized. The PDP urged its supporters in Gombe to remain calm and united as the party navigates this process.

The ruling marks a significant moment for the PDP as it seeks to reinforce its adherence to democratic principles amid ongoing political challenges. As the party prepares for the upcoming primary, the stakes are high for all involved, with Gombe State's governorship race now wide open once again.
