Oyetola: Nigeria's Artisanal Fishing Sector Faces Crisis Amid Infrastructure Deficiencies

Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, Nigeria's Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, has highlighted significant challenges facing the artisanal fishing sector, including poor infrastructure, inadequate cold-chain facilities, and limited access to modern fishing technology.

In a statement following a meeting with Turkish fishing investors from CRD Impex, Oyetola emphasized that these barriers severely impact the livelihoods of millions who depend on artisanal fishing.

The minister pointed out that inadequate processing and storage facilities, alongside limited market access, further exacerbate the struggles of local fishers. However, he also sees these challenges as opportunities for investment aimed at modernizing the fisheries value chain.

Oyetola affirmed the Federal Government's commitment to creating an investment-friendly environment to attract local and international investors into the marine economy. He stressed that new investments should complement, not displace, local fishing communities.

“We welcome investors who can bring capital, technology, and expertise,” Oyetola stated. “However, investment must be inclusive and sustainable, empowering our artisanal fish producers rather than undermining their livelihoods.”

The government aims to transform existing challenges into opportunities by encouraging investments that enhance infrastructure, processing, and market access.

The Turkish delegation, led by Cem Tarhan, expressed interest in exploring investment opportunities within Nigeria's fisheries sector, citing their extensive experience in fisheries and aquaculture in Turkey.

During their visit, the investors assessed various facilities in Lagos and Cross River states, including the Kirikiri Lighter Terminal and the Ozumba Mbadiwe Fish Market in Lekki.

Oyetola’s remarks underline the urgent need for strategic investments to uplift Nigeria's artisanal fishing sector, which plays a crucial role in the economy and the lives of many Nigerians.

As the government seeks to engage investors, it remains crucial that local communities are prioritized to ensure a balanced approach to growth in the sector.
