The bill was passed during a plenary session on Thursday, presided over by Speaker Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide. Following the presentation of a report by the House Committee on Health, led by Hon. Wahab Haruna, lawmakers unanimously supported the motion to adopt the report.
After a thorough review, the Assembly considered the bill clause-by-clause, culminating in a third reading that received overwhelming backing through a voice vote. The Clerk of the House, Mr. Sakiru Adabakin, subsequently read the bill for the final time, and the Speaker directed its transmission to Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun for assent.
In addition to the abortion bill, four other legislative proposals also advanced, including the Gender Balance in Political and Public Offices Bill and the Ogun State Human Sacrifice Prevention and Prohibition Bill.
In another notable development, the Assembly voted to pardon former Deputy Speaker Hon. Dare Kadiri by converting his impeachment into a voluntary resignation. This decision came after Kadiri appealed for a dignified conclusion to his public service, emphasizing that the request was not intended to revisit past controversies.
The Chief Whip, Hon. Omobola Bakare, presented the appeal, and lawmakers supported the motion to adopt the committee's report without delving into the circumstances surrounding Kadiri's previous removal.
The resolution reflects the Assembly's intent to foster a respectful closure for Kadiri while focusing on legislative priorities that impact the welfare of the state’s citizens.
This dual legislation marks a progressive step for Ogun State, with the Assembly prioritizing women's health and addressing past grievances in governance.
